Thursday, July 21st - The Woodsman - Rated R - Under 18 not allowed.

Kevin Bacon gives one of the best, most nuanced performances of his career in The Woodsman, a daring and thought-provoking drama he co-produced with his wife, Kyra Sedgwick. In portraying a convicted pedophile named Walter, recently released from prison and struggling to rebuild his life, Bacon and writer-director Nicole Kassell (making her feature-film debut) do a remarkable job of exploring all facets of this troubling yet very human character, from his continuing criminal impulses to the despair he feels over having to conceal his horrible past. Sedgwick costars as the one woman who appears willing to accept Walter, secrets and all.

Discussion following the movie will be outstanding and will address the following concepts:

Confidentiality vs. Duty to Warn/Protect
Treatment Approaches for Sex Offenders
Etiology of Pedophilia
Ethical Considerations in Treatment

Future offerings will include:

Aug. 18 – Big Fish - A Tim Burton film about the oversized stories of Edward Bloom, played as a young man by Ewan McGregor and as a dying father by Albert Finney. Edward's son Will (Billy Crudup) sits by his father's bedside but has little patience with the old man's fables, because he feels these stories have kept him from knowing who his father really is. Burton dives into Bloom's imagination with zest, sending the determined young man into haunted woods, an idealized Southern town, a traveling circus, and much more. Also featuring Jessica Lange, Alison Lohman, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, and Steve Buscemi.

Sept. 15 - Taking Lives - FBI agent (Angelina Jolie) brings her unique skills (and brooding, low-key demeanor) to the vexing case of a killer who, out of apparent self-loathing, steals the identities of his victims and lives their lives until it's time for the next gruesome murder. Ethan Hawke plays the killer's alleged next victim, and in a film filled with twists, Keifer Sutherland is menacingly cast as a shifty suspect..

Oct. 20 - A Day Without a Mexican - One morning California wakes up to find that one third of it's population has disappeared. A thick fog surrounds the State and communication outside it's boundaries is completely cut off. As the day goes by, we discover that the characteristic that links the 14 million disappeared is their Hispanic background.

Nov. 10 - I Heart Huckabees - An existential comedy, I Heart Huckabees dares to ponder life's biggest questions. We focus on the unlikely pairing of an environmentalist (Jason Schwartzman) and a firefighter (Mark Wahlberg) as they depend on existential detectives (Lily Tomlin, Dustin Hoffman) and a French nihilist (Isabelle Huppert) to make sense of their existential crises, brought on (respectively) by a two-faced chain-store executive (Jude Law) and his spokesmodel girlfriend (Naomi Watts). I Heart Huckabees is an audacious mess, like life itself, and accepting that is the key to enjoying both.
