Thursday, January 19 - Monster - Rated R - Under 18 not allowed.

Charlize Theron vanishes into the role of Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute who murdered at least seven men. Monster traces her relationship with a young woman (Christina Ricci), which intertwines with the murder spree. The movie finds compassion for Wuornos but unflinchingly faces her brutal crimes; Theron expresses this woman's horrific history without softening her terrifying, dead-eyed stare.

Discussion following the movie will be outstanding and will address the following concepts:
Victims Victimizing Others
Predatory Side of Human Beings
Life on The Streets
Stability of Personality Characteristics

Future offerings will include:

Feb. 9 - King of Hearts - Set during World War I, this subtitled movie features a soldier separated from his unit in France. He wanders into a small village that is populated by the residents of an insane asylum, whose keepers have fled--a fact that escapes the soldier. (Suggested by Peter Easterberg, our friend and tax preparer)

Mar. 16 - Mine Own Executioner -Burgess Meredith plays a lay-analyst treating a WWII British soldier traumatized by his P.O.W. experiences at the hands of the Japanese in Burma. Will he mistakenly kill his wife before Meredith can help him resolve his still simmering rage? The heart of this film is about the humanness of the analyst who mistreats his wife and has thoughts of the attractive wife of a colleague.
(Suggested by Dan Kaplan of Osborn Maledon in Phoenix)

Apr. 20 - Pay it Forward - A school social studies assignment leads to social changes that spread from city-to-city. A young boy (Haley Joel Osment) decides that if he can do three good deeds for someone and they in turn can "pay it forward," positive changes can occur. The boy's initial benefactors are a drug addict (James Cavaziel), his badly scarred school teacher (Kevin Spacey), and his alcoholic mother (Helen Hunt).
.
May 18 - Crash - Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters, a black police detective with a drugged out mother and a thieving younger brother, two car thieves, the district attorney and his pampered wife, a racist cop who disgusts his younger partner, a Persian-immigrant who buys a gun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets, and more.
(Suggested by Bernadette Diakhate of Paradise Valley School District)

June 15 - Door To Door - This earnest movie about a door-to-door salesman with cerebral palsy (based on the true story of Bill Porter) could have been cloyingly sweet, but a sense of humor and the clear, unpretentious performance of William H. Macy keep it from drowning in sentiment. Door to Door follows Porter from when he first gets his job in the mid-'50s, to his brief retirement in the late 1990s, when door-to-door salesmen became outmoded by catalogs and the Internet. Also featuring Kyra Sedgwick and the great Helen Mirren as Porter's mother.
(First 8 people to register will receive a complimentary Watkins Product, from the real Bill Porter's website, courtesy of Down To Earth Enterprises!)

"Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm -- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves."
--T.S. Elliot
