Ahwatukee Living’s Ask the Experts« Sharing Sherry's Emails | Index | An Easy December » Hitting Threshold- Dr. JasonThere are many theories about positive motivational thought, and many different approaches as to how one may go about creating change. Today I would like to correct a mis-conception out there about what can or can not be done when it comes to human behavior. Some say that behaviors never truly change and that a person tends to remain the same. I personally see people change every day and I don't think there is a statement that is further from the truth and I would like to share a personal story that brought me to the end of my rope and forced me to eliminate a behavior for good. The year was 1994 and I was doing some tutoring for a x-review class. The class was video taped every week so that any student who missed the review could make up the material on his or her own time. At the time I did not master the importance of compassion and the laws of practicing sacred speech, and at the end of one of the classes the video tape was still rolling and I made a rather insensitive comment about a colleague of mine. Now, here comes the bomb: Approximately two weeks later many of us gathered around the video screen to review for an up and coming term exam and since we had the videos to watch, we did not need to review our written notes as much. So as the tape came to its completion and we merrily chomped on our popcorn, out came my comment and down went my credibility. I can just remember that sinking feeling as my fellow colleague turned an interesting shade of rage-infused purple, and I had to just suck it up and profusely apologize for the next 90 or 100 days. The comment eventually was forgiven, but I hit a threshold moment. I did not change through a positive behavior, but rather I changed through pain. I share this story for sometimes we just have to flat out hit a wall and realize that there is no going back. Sometimes this change occurs through challenge, strife, loss, or simply hitting a point of no return where you practically have no choice. Often times at Living Inline, we see people go through these cycles of change. Whatever the category may be, we never stop enjoying seeing the change that people can make. Hitting a point of threshold is sometimes a very good thing and change can truly become manifest. This up and coming year we would like to be your personal agents for change, for staying the same is just not an attractive option any more. There is always a next step for you. So what is your next step and how can he help you? Tigers do change their stripes. Leopards do change their spots and we see these changes every day. Now how about you? Thank you for all your loving support and we send you our best thoughts of appreciation.
